Course programme

Diploma / Postgraduate Diploma / MA in SupervisionCourses

The courses are designed to explore the theory and practice of supervision from a psychodynamic and psychoanalytic perspective. These qualifications are offered to experienced psychoanalytic psychotherapists and psychodynamic counsellors who wish to train and register as supervisors.

The one year WPF Therapy Diploma in Supervision can lead on to a Postgraduate Diploma and MA in Supervision.

The courses consist of theoretical, experiential and supervisory components. The theoretical input is based on psychoanalytic and psychodynamic principles, methodologies and concepts and the course encourages critical engagement with the theory and practice of supervision. Assessment is ongoing and aims to ensure that there is congruence between the students theoretical knowledge and the supervisory practice and that they are able to work with the dynamics and processes of supervision within the psychoanalytic and psychodynamic perspective.

Diploma in Supervision
A one year, part-time post qualification Diploma. The course is a recognition of supervision as an academic and clinical discipline with a body of theory and technique of it's own. Teaching and supervisory methods emphasise the multi-layered, multi-faceted processes of supervision. Included in this Diploma are seminars and supervision of supervision on the practice and theory of psychodynamic and psychoanalytic supervision.

The course takes place on Tuesdays, 10.45am - 2.30pm. Students need a minimum of two supervisees. WPF Therapy may be able to help in finding a supervision placement.

Postgraduate Diploma in Supervision
(validated by Roehampton University)
This one year, part-time course is open to holders of the Diploma in Supervision and has an APEL entry criteria for suitably qualified applicants.

Why Supervision Training?
Supervision requires the development of new skills in order to work with the various aspects of supervision and conscious and unconscious dynamics and processes.

Aims
To provide a training in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic supervision to appropriately trained psychodynamic counsellors and psychoanalytic psychotherapists. The training considers the theory that underpins supervisory technique, links theory to practice through the supervision of supervisory work and develops the ability to be aware of the processes inherent within supervision. The qualification entitles counsellors to supervision counsellors and psychotherapists to supervise counsellors and therapists.

Why train at WPF Therapy?
WPF Therapy was one of the first to develop a supervision training in 1985. Over the years it has developed a unique training in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic supervision in which theoretical understanding and clinical practice are linked.

Qualification

* Those students who successfully complete the first year will receive the Diploma in Supervision.
* It is then possible to continue for a further year, on successful completion of which, and with a 10,000 word dissertation, it will be possible to obtain an MA in Supervision, validated by Roehampton University.
* Those who obtain the Diploma in Supervision will be eligible to join BAPPS (British Association of Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Supervision).

Course description • What is the training?
The training consists of supervision of supervision, seminars and observed supervision. The underlying philosophy of the course is that learning takes place through experience and in all the course components clinical practice and experience are explored so that students can bring together theory and practice and develop as supervisors.

* Supervisory placements
The course requires that you are providing, or are in a position to provide, supervision to a level appropriate to your qualification for more than one counsellor or psychotherapist, either individually or in a group. Supervisees need to be able to work with psychodynamic concepts and unconscious processes. WPF Therapy cannot provide you with supervisory placements but may be able to advise you on places to contact.
* About the training
The seminars are a forum in which an understanding of theory and practice are obtained through processes of reading, exploration, experiential learning, discussion and theoretical input. Some of the issues the training covers are:
• contracts and boundaries
• the triangular nature of supervision
• transference and countertransference in supervision
• supervising groups
• organisational issues and the clinical rhombus
• ethical issues and practice
Supervision of supervision is in small groups of four in which your supervisory work is supervised.

Applicants will need to submit:

* An initial application form
* A curriculum vitae
* A statement giving details of both previous and present experience of providing supervision of counsellors or psychotherapists

* A statement giving reasons for applying at this time for training in supervision.

Selection is on the basis of an interview, either individual or group.
