About this course
You will need at least some GCSEs in the C-E range including a grade D or above in English and Maths. Alternatively you will have completed a Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery. You must also be able to demonstrate an interest in the subject
and a willingness to study this course. A course guidance interview and a successfully completed initial assessment test will also be required.

This course combines practical skills with job knowledge. It includes
practical work using hand and portable power tools to produce a
number of practical projects. You will also gain an understanding of
employment responsibilities and rights, and health and safety in
construction.
The course covers a range of mandatory and optional units
which include:
· Knowing how to carry out safe working practices
· Knowledge of information, quantities and communicating with
others
· Knowledge of building methods and construction technology
· Know how to carry out first fixing operations
· Know how to carry out second fixing operations
· Know how to erect structural carcassing
· Know how to carry out maintenance
· Know how to set up and operate a circular saw.
You will also be given the opportunity to achieve additional qualifications alongside your main course. These will include qualifications in Functional Skills and can also include more
specialist awards relevant to the subject you are studying.
How will I be assessed?
Your job knowledge and practical skills will be assessed in a number of ways, including:
· Practical tests
· Observations of you working
· Assignments and knowledge questions
· Projects
· Portfolio of work-based evidence
· By completing a test at the end of the year.

On successful completion you may:
Progress to NVQ Level 2 in Wood Occupations, provided you are able to secure a work placement within the industry.

Progress to an Apprenticeship programme, which combines

Progress to a Level 3 Diploma in Carpentry or Joinery.
Achieving this qualification will give you the equivalent of 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C.
