The MD course provides an integrated teaching and learning approach commencing with the first semester Foundations of Medical Practice unit (Phase 1). This provides necessary background knowledge in biomedical sciences and introductions to clinical, professional and scholarly practice.Foundations is followed by two semesters of the System-based Learning unit (Phase 2) which uses blocks of learning related to body systems in continuing to integrate the six PLACES themes. Content includes detailed scientific knowledge, clinical skills, research methods, leadership and teamwork, and educational theory and practice. Case-enhanced tutorials, laboratories, clinical workshops and online learning are used as learning opportunities. The final two and a half years primarily consist of clinical immersion in various hospital and community based settings (Phase 3) where students develop and practice their clinical and professional skills. Revision of scientific and population health will be integrated into this phase, together with further learning of all the PLACES themes. Many students will spend their third year learning in a UWA Rural Clinical School. All students are expected to complete a scholarly activity - beginning in 2nd year and continuing into years 3 and 4 - which emphasise original research, clinical audit and improvement, coursework, or service learning, in an area of student interest. Please note that no credit for previous undergraduate studies will be given towards the MD.

Structure

Innovative teaching methods are used including blended learning. This is in the form of lectures, tutorials and practicals supported by electronic resources created at UWA. The use of these resources will help integrate and consolidate theoretical learning into clinical practice. The Curriculum is fully integrated, both vertically and horizontally, and is made up of thematic groups emphasising the following areas:

  1. Scientific foundations of medical practice

  2. Foundations of clinical skills, clinical reasoning and decision making

  3. Foundations of the role of the medical profession in population health, public policy, health reform and medical politics

  4. Personal and professional development of a doctor and the interactions within a multicultural and multiracial society
