Introduction
The doctoral programme is research oriented and is designed to provide the theoretical and
scientific knowledge necessary for scholarly pursuit in oriental medicine. Students are
required to show competence in appropriate areas relevant to their major area of study by
completing theory and research courses in oriental medicine and related disciplines. This advanced research programme is offered to students who have completed a Master of
Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and are looking forward to continuing their academic goals to the PhD level.
Research Project
All students are required to prepare research papers of a minimum of 10-20 pages for each
of the CORE courses and 12 units ELECTIVES as well.
Please include the following areas in your research papers (if applicable):
- History & Philosophy and its evolution
- Aetiology & causes
- Definition & symptoms
- Western Medical Aspects
- Oriental medical aspects
- Possible side effects & related illnesses
- Latest updates, research and findings
- 1-3 case studies per research paper
Note: The research project must be type written on good quality white bond paper.
Total units: 81 units
(Applicants must provide evidence of their qualifications) It is recommended that applicants
submit course descriptions of Master’s Degree courses to assist the Admissions Committee
in determining if prerequisites have been met.
Dissertation
Each doctoral candidate is required to complete a dissertation that embodies original and
independent research, and demonstrates advanced scholarly achievement. 4 copies of the
completed dissertation are to be sent in to the University to be passed to the dissertation
committee for review. After the committee have finished their review the candidate is
required to give an oral defence of their work to the examining panel.The submitted dissertation becomes the property of the American Liberty University, but theUniversity does not limit the author’s rights to publish the results.
The dissertation must satisfy one of the following criteria:
- · Introducing an innovation in a scientific/scholarly field
- · Developing a new scientific/scholarly method
- · Applying an already known method in a new area
