Documentary and Factual Production Management
This course provides a thorough overview of how to production manage a factual or documentary series, and is aimed at those with a little knowledge of the job and relevant experience e.g. Production Assistants, Production Secretaries, Co-ordinators. The course will concentrate on the role of the Production Manager for factual and documentary programmes shot on tape.
The course will cover, amongst other things:
- The role, function and responsibilities of the Production Manager
- Basic scheduling, budgeting and cashflows for documentaries
- Union agreements
- Music and archive copyright clearances
- Insurance; Employment law, Health and Safety
- Location Management; travelling abroad
- Technical knowledge and understanding
- Post-production - current working practices using new technology
- Defending your budget to a Programme Finance Manager
- Preparing cost reports and Progress Reports
- Delivery of programmes - administratively and technically
- Managing the production and its personnel
The main thread throughout the week is planning, scheduling and budgeting a programme based on a brief provided.
The course tutor is an experienced documentary production manager with specialised speakers in other production-related areas brought in at key stages throughout the course to provide additional tuition.
