This Build your own MA (BYOMA) short course will enable you to demonstrate an advanced engagement with the application of the conceptual and professional skills necessary in the creation of a documentary film.
This course allows for a range of approaches to the creative work, but pays particular attention to aesthetic, ethical and institutional contexts in order to ensure that you produce work which is conceptually grounded as well as adroit in its manipulation of form and technology.
This short course will enable you to demonstrate a high level of technical and craft skills in the production of a short documentary, applying appropriate tools and conventions and to critically evaluate your own documentary practice in relation to theoretical and institutional contexts.

Course details

Integral to our courses is the belief that people improve their professional practice by taking time out to reflect on and reassess what they currently do in the workplace and by sharing their real-life experiences with the other like-minded professionals.

As a result each course is unique and geared to the experiences of the individuals that are participating, which may result in the course content altering slightly from course to course.

This short course will examine topics such as:

Choosing your subject
Research and project development
Technologies – opportunities, challenges and effects
The institutional context – channels of distribution, pitching and commissioning
Realism, truth and narrative – telling a story and ‘keeping it real’
The regulatory and moral framework - legal and ethical aspects.

Assessment Following the creative retreat, you will have the opportunity to further develop your knowledge with seven weeks of supported online study.

During this time, you will take part in a variety of online exercises, forums and projects which culminate in the submission of an assignment (equivalent to 5,000 words), the specific subject matter and content of which will be determined by your interests and professional context.

The assessment for this short course will be a short documentary, together with accompanying research and critical reflective analysis of product and process.

Each student will negotiate the nature of the documentary and your roles in it with your learning facilitator.

Successful completion of this assignment will gain you 20 Masters level credits.
