Course programme

Everyone works and learns at a different pace and each student may have different prior experience. These experiences can either help or hinder their learning so bearing this in mind we try to fit the following programme into each individual students requirements and expectations.

Please note that this course can be split, if required, over a maximum period of 3 months.

Days 1 to 4 These are introductory days when grooming out, bathing and drying are covered. You will learn about the different breeds and coat types and the various techniques required to achieve a well prepared dog. You will also learn about the different tools and equipment, and their uses, and about the various shampoos and conditioners and how best to select the correct one.

You will be taught how to handle the dog correctly and at the same time, start to build your knowledge of the many breeds that a groomer has to deal with.

Days 5 to 8 As the most important part of the grooming process, you will continue with both bathing and drying but you will also be shown about nail and ear care as well as identifying health problems that should be reported to the owner.

You will begin to handle clippers and various types of scissors, and be shown the correct techniques for using them to allow for a safe grooming experience for both you and the dog. During this time you will be gaining valuable handling experience. Good techniques learned and practiced at this stage are the basis of a good groomer.

Days 9 to 12 You will be expected by this stage to be able to successfully bath and dry your own dog in preparation of your trimming work. Your confidence will be building and you will be begin to feel much more comfortable with the grooming equipment and the handling of the dogs. You will continue to add to your knowledge of breeds as well as begin to style and shape the most popular ones.

Days 13 to 16 Now all the work and learning of the past 12 days will be brought together and you will be completing dogs with little or no supervision. You will be encouraged to make your own decisions in assessing the dog and the work required which will include shampoo and conditioner choice, tools and methods used to complete the trim of the dog.

During these last days you will be assessed on all the stages of grooming that you have been taught throughout the course.
