Description
This is a thirteen-week course, consisting of one day per week training and continual assessment in College, followed by an on-line Applicable Building Regulations exam taken shortly after course completion. Aimed at those with no formal electrical background, candidates will achieve a recognised qualification and a level of competence through training in order to join a Self Certification scheme for defined electrical work in dwellings in order to meet the requirements of Part P (electrical safety) of the Building Regulations. Successful completion will lead to a nationally accredited Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) at level 2, being the EAL Certificate for Domestic Electrical Installers.

Course Length
13 Weeks - One Day per Week

What will I study?
The course is built around seventeen units of competence (see below). These are designed to train and assess competence in the design, installation, inspection and testing of new wiring connected to existing circuits, installing a new circuit from an existing consumer unit and the replacement of electrical components. Earthing & bonding requirements are also covered. The domestic electrical work should be required as a consequence of other (non-electrical) work carried out, and will be limited to 230V installations. The work will be for the purpose of supplying for example a shower unit, cooker point, central heating system or new lighting/socket positions required as a result of refurbishment. Component exchange will include domestic wiring accessories, electrical equipment and controls. There is a requirement that persons carrying out electrical work in dwellings have knowledge of Part P (electrical safety), and other applicable Building Regulations that may affect that work. This is covered in Unit 001 of the qualification, and will be externally assessed by multiple-choice examination.

How will I learn?
This will consist of a combination of the theory and practice required in order to cover the outcomes of the assessment criteria. Course notes and some of the course books required will be supplied, which will be referred to throughout the duration of the course. The emphasis will be on group work, and there will be a combination of PowerPoint presentations, audiovisual materials, practical demonstration/exercises and on-line resources utilised to aid learning and achievement.

How will I be assessed?
Units 2 to 17 inclusive will be formally assessed by a combination of internal practical assessment &/or multiple-choice question paper. These assessments are carried out on the same day as the training session for the specific unit(s). Unit 001 will be formally assessed by external examination in the form of an on-line multiple-choice question paper. There will also be informal internal assessment prior to the examination in the form of self-assessment progress tests and oral questioning.

Where could it lead?
This qualification will enable candidates to apply for membership of a government approved Competent Persons Self Certification scheme in relation to Part P (electrical safety) of the Building Regulations. Candidates successfully completing this course may also be interested in the following Electrical Installation qualifications (not exhaustive):

- City & Guilds 2330 The Certificate in Electrotechnical Technology
- City & Guilds 2381 16th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)
