This foundation degree (FdA) prepares you for work with young children. It’s ideal if you want to progress onto a full degree but do not have the right A levels.
You’ll combine theory with practice, learning from professionals who’ve worked with children in a variety of education and early years settings and hearing from specialist guest speakers. Your studies will also include gathering information, observations of children and work processes, and learning how to plan.
You’ll also look at how important play is to a child’s development. You will study early childhood researchers and theorists, staying updated on current government perspectives and practices.
This foundation degree prepares you for work with children from 0-5 years. You can then progress to complete a full honours degree in just one additional year. Your undergraduate degree could also lead to postgraduate qualifications, such as primary teacher training (PGCE/School Direct), early years' teacher (EYT) training and Masters degrees.

Reflecting on Practice
You’ll gain important experience in teaching young children. This foundation course introduces early childhood studies, then extends and develops these as the programme progresses. To help guide you through your studies, you’ll be assigned a personal tutor who will provide pastoral support and advice.
Your study time will be divided into contact time and self-directed time. Self-directed study is an important part of the learning and you will be expected to work by yourself and with your peers.
The Virtual Learning Environment, ‘Blackboard’, gives you flexible access to course materials (such as handouts and PowerPoint presentations).
During the course, you will complete tasks in all modules. These tasks help you link theoretical perspectives to your practice. They also give you the chance to reflect on values, practices, assumptions and policies. The teaching of each module will provide opportunities for you to:
Work with others
Develop life skills
Demonstrate the capacity to plan, share goals, and work as a member of a team
Communicate and present spoken and written arguments
