This course will give you experience of a career in the field of child care and education in both the statutory and private sectors. It will extend both your knowledge and practical skills. It will also build your communication, teamwork and study skills within the vocational framework. It provides you with knowledge with children from birth to 7 years and practical experience from birth to 5 years. Once achieved it will enable you to work in across a variety of childcare and education settings.

What you need to know
How will I study?

You will study 8 units in the first year including: - Child development from conception to 7 years; - Children’s health and well-being; - Play and learning; observation of children. - Unit 8 is a Professional Practice unit, which will require you to be observed in placement and undertake a range of activities in which you are assessed. You will plan and lead a range of activities in placement across the age ranges. You will also complete the Effective Practice Study Task, which is a 5000 word assignment that is externally marked. You are required to have achieved GCSE English Language at A*-C to be enrolled on this course. Some students may also study GCSE Mathematics or Functional Skills Numeracy if you have not previously achieved a minimum of a C grade.
How will I be taught?

Teaching and learning methods include, practical classes, group and individual work, lectures, project work, self-study and study trips. In accordance with the new Enhanced Disclosure (DBS) regulations, all students will have to sign a “disqualification by association” declaration form before going into work placements with under 5’s.
How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by a variety of internal and external assessments including exams, assignment writing and placement portfolio.
