Are you passionate about the education, development and care of young people? The BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Early Years Education will help you to develop your knowledge and understanding through hands-on learning in a number of interesting areas including growth and development, food and nutrition, care of children and play, and towards the end of the course you will get the chance to develop your skills further on a short work placement in a local play group. Studying the course will also introduce you to some of the innovative work being done with children throughout the country and you will also get the chance to visit local parks and play groups. As part of the course you will get the chance to upgrade your English and maths skills and tutors will also support you if you wish to progress to the next level of study. Past students on this course have progressed to higher levels of study at the college and then moved on to further study at university. Once fully qualified, many of our learners have gained employment in the early years’ sector in schools, nurseries and many other settings. To enhance your learning you will also get the chance to hear presentations from guest speakers working in the sector including early years’ professionals, health care professionals and employment agencies. This is a one year full-time course.

About this course

To access this course you are required to have: Three of more GCSEs at grade G or above An interest in the subject and keenness to study Acceptance on the course is subject to an interview and you will also be required to have a satisfactory DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) check. If you want to progress to the Level 2 qualification you will need to successfully complete this level along with the required level for English and Maths.

By studying this course you will: Develop skills to effectively communicate with children Be able to plan a physical care routine for children Prepare activities which will encourage children to eat healthily Understand how to provide a safe environment for children Know how to value children by treating each as an individual Practice ways in which you can provide a stimulating environment for children Gain valuable team working and communication skills by taking part in a group activity which would engage children in a variety of activities Develop your skills in reading, writing & speaking through presentations to fellow students, reading and following instructions, planning and evaluating activities and completing job applications Develop your maths skills by designing games and activities for children (using number & calculation), organising practical early years activities (using measure, volume & quantity) and keeping children safe (using ratios) How will I be assessed? This is an assignment-based course and there are no exams. Your written work and practical group activities will be continually assessed throughout the programme. What can I do next?
