Description

Employers continually face the need to ensure that their staff obtain a range of technical and statutory qualifications. East Malling Short Courses aims to serve this sector by providing high quality training for legislative requirements, such as pesticides application training, first aid, forklift, tractor driving, chainsaw use and plant husbandry.

EMSC has already become a registered Lantra Awards approved Training Provider and can also provide training for a wide variety of NPTC certificates of competence. East Malling Short Courses intends to be highly responsive to the industry’s training needs and increase the portfolio of courses offered as governed by demand.

Due to the large range of pesticides sprayers located on site at EMR, the outstanding associated facilities and available land, our aim is to become a centre of excellence for pesticides training in the South East.

Dates of courses for pesticides application and first aid are already available.

In addition to the technical and legislative training, East Malling Short Courses is also offering workshops for the amateur gardener. These will take place in the Hatton Fruit Garden; formerly the kitchen garden of the Grade 1 listed Bradbourne House. Plantings in the Hatton Fruit Garden were inspired by the fruit plantings in Louis XIV kitchen garden at Versailles. The fruit trees have been trained and pruned over many decades to produce cordons, espaliers, goblets, pyramids, fans, arches, crowns, le bateau and arcure forms.

Amateur courses will focus on seasonal pruning, how to plant and establish fruit trees and bushes. For the more adventurous amateur gardener there will also be a session on grafting. Through these classes participants will learn how to manage a fruit crop in a small area, how to control tree growth and what to do when things appear to get out of hand.
