ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) - Level 1

This course is split into 2 levels. In order to get a full certificate you need to achieve levels 1 and 2.

• Level 1 consists of 3 units and is 16 weeks (approx 5 weeks per unit).
• Level 2 consists of 5 units and is 40 weeks (approx 8 weeks per unit).

If when you are on the course you are concerned that you will not finish within the time, please see your tutor – we encourage students to work at their own pace and provide extra support when necessary.

Level 1
Module 1 - Basic Concepts of IT

You will gain knowledge in the following:

• General concepts of a computer - types, main parts, performance
• Hardware - memory, input devices, output devices storage devices
• Software - types, operating system software, application software
• Networks - LAN, WAN, intranet, extranet
• - uses of large scale computer systems
• Internet - buying and selling over the Internet
• Health & Safety - working environment, precautions
• Security & Copyright - Security risk, prevention, viruses

Module 2 - Using the Computer & Managing Files

You will gain knowledge in the following:

• Computer environment - Start & shut down a PC, non-responding computer
• Basic information & operations - RAM, desktop configuration (date/time, colour)
• Formatting removable media (floppy disks, hard drives)
• Install/uninstall software
• Desktop - icons/shortcuts, move icons
• Managing files - folders/files, navigate folders, create folders/sub-folders
• Work with files - file types, number of files, duplicate files between folders, rename files
• Delete/restore files
• Virus - how transmitted, scanning software

Module 7 - Information and Communication

You will gain knowledge in the following:

• Difference between Internet & Internet terms (HTTP, URL, FTP)
• Web addresses - make-up, search engines, web browser
• Security - protected websites, digital certificate, encryption, fraud
• Hyperlinks - navigate the web, bookmarks, search using keywords
• E-mail - make up of email address, advantages/disadvantages, viruses
• Open/close email account
• Send/receive/reply and forward messages
• Save attachments

2. Practice assignments (there are 4) - Tutor checks each practice
3. Sit exam when ready
