Course programme

Education Studies is an important subject within our modular programme. As such there is a wide range of modules for you to choose from which explore education from many perspectives.

Course Structure and Content

In year one a core module introduces key concepts and skills that underpin the subject. In addition there is a choice of modules that enable you to explore wider interests: early learning, childhood, adolescence, schools, international education. You are required to study a second subject from our modular programme alongside education, for the first year.

In year two you will consider more deeply the current issues in education in a second core module. This module incorporates a placement in a school or other educational setting. There is also a wide range of modules to choose from which encourages you to think critically about some contemporary issues: teaching, classrooms, diversity, inclusion, educational policy, arts education, the internet, global and international perspectives in education. There are opportunities to carry out original research and pursue your own interests in these areas. You can even study abroad in another European country under the ERASMUS scheme.

In year three there are further opportunities to follow your interests through selecting from a wide range of optional modules taught by expert staff. There is also a compulsory research-based module: you are required to identify your own topic to research and will be assigned a tutor who will support you throughout the year.

There are also modules in each year which give you the chance to work in schools and other educational settings in a placement to carry out research and observations. We have an excellent partnership with schools and settings in the region where you will be able to further develop your understanding of the nature of teaching and learning.

Assessment Methods

Assessment of education studies is through coursework and work on placements; currently there are no examinations.

Careers

Education Studies will provide an excellent preparation for you to work with learners of all ages within the education sector. The commercial and industrial worlds are also very interested in people with knowledge about education and training. You will have the knowledge and skills to work in educational and training advisory roles in a range of organisations included businesses, local authorities, non-government organisations (such as Oxfam), museums, art galleries and libraries.

As an Education Studies graduate you will be able to apply for PGCE courses in teacher training, including ours at Bath Spa University if you have the required GCSEs. If you intend to be a primary or early years teacher we recommend you look at our Education Leading to PGCE Primary course as flexible a route into teaching.
