The MA Education & Subject programme is an innovative Masters level education programme, which is designed to enhance the subject knowledge and pedagogical knowledge of practising teachers, educators and others who have an interest in education.

The programme will provide participants with the opportunity to research and improve their own practise, by discovering the new skills that can be gained from studying their subject specialism to an advanced academic level. This process is supported by the study of contemporary education theory, through modules designed to provide the skills and critical understanding necessary to innovate in a rapidly evolving educational landscape.

This programme emphasises education as an academic field of study and the importance of research in the development of teaching practise. It is expected that practitioners who graduate from this course will have the skills and academic knowledge that will prepare them for education in the 21st century. It has been designed for practising teachers, educators and others with a personal or professional interest in the field of education. The programme aims to provide opportunities for engagement with key theories, concepts and ideas in Education and English Language that link to the national curriculum.
The structure of the programme is designed to meet the needs of those seeking to develop a more academic understanding of Education and English Language. The combination of modules available allows teachers, educators and others to gain a named award and enhance their subject knowledge. The pedagogic framework provides theoretical and conceptual perspectives, including key ideas in Education and English Language that serve to deepen the learning experience.

Normally a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours Degree in a relevant discipline.
Please note that a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (formally the Criminal Records Bureau – CRB) is required for students where they are required to visit settings other than their own workplace and involves access to children.

The education component&nbsp;</span><span>runs in parallel with subject specific study and comprises 50% of the&nbsp;</span><span>course.</span><br><br><span>Of a total of 180 credits of Masters level study, 60 Credits will come&nbsp;</span><span>from the education component and 60 credits will come from the subject&nbsp;</span><span>component. The final 60 credits will come from a dissertation phase,&nbsp;</span><span>which will allow the student fuse the two areas of study by way of a&nbsp;</span><span>education inspired research.</span></p> <p>The full Masters award includes a 12,000-15,000 word research dissertation in a specialised area of your choice. Prior to a dissertation, students will complete 120 credits of taught modules: 60 credits within Education, and 60 credits within English Language.</p> <p><strong>English Language block</strong></p> <p>The English Language component will consist of four 15-credit modules such as: Language Issues in Multilingual Societies, Varieties of World Englishes, Language and Diversity, and Language and Power.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Pedagogy: Theory and Practice block</strong></p> <p>Term 1</p> <p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Learning, Teaching and Assessment (30 credits)</span></p> <p>This module aims to develop participants’ understanding of a range of learning, teaching and assessment strategies which promote learners’ progress in order that all can achieve their full potential. They will be helped to develop self-direction and originality in problem-solving in relation to the module content, and act autonomously in planning and implementing change in their educational setting, taking account of current thinking and literature in related areas.</p> <p>Term 2</p> <p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Curriculum Theory &amp; development (30 credits)</span></p> <p>This module aims to support development of subject knowledge in the participant’s subject discipline or age phase specialism. It is focused on contribution to curriculum development within the educational setting. Participants will be guided in critiquing a range of guidance and policy documents relevant to practice with a view to identifying the key concepts and perspectives on which they are based and how they relate to and influence practice.</p> </div>
