Course programme

BEd (Hons) leading to QTS Education – Primary (3-7 or 5-11 years)
Mode: full-time

This programme offers the opportunity to become a first class primary school teacher. The faculty has a long established partnership with 500 schools and the Primary Centre provides students with an authentic environment in which to work. Students undertake professional school-based experience in at least five different schools of at least 40 days per year.

The programme combines the theoretical elements of primary education with extensive practical experience. In many areas, the course content exceeds the basic requirements for training as specified by the Teacher Development Agency.

In year one, students gain a good understanding of the National Curriculum. They focus on particular age phases and subjects on the basis of their teaching experience, including children in the age ranges 3-7 (Advanced Early Years) or 5-11 (with a focus on English, Maths or Science). Additionally, students choose one of the foundation curriculum subjects of Art, Geography, History, PE, DT or ICT to study plus a course in subject leadership and management skills.

As well as gaining a good understanding of all National Curriculum subjects, this course offers the opportunity to become a specialist in two subject areas, therefore making our students highly attractive to schools. The course is divided into a combination of 4 areas which run throughout the course:

  • Professional studies and practice
  • School-based experiences
  • Curriculum studies (all subjects taught in the primary school)
  • Subject specialism

In year four, students undertake a non-teaching placement by working with, for example an educational psychologist, a schools’ library service, study centre, or one of a number of other related contexts.

Why choose this course?

  • In many areas course content exceeds basic requirements for training as specified by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA)
  • Long-established traditional partnership in teacher training with 500 schools
  • The School of Education boasts, in many cases, a 100 per cent graduate employment rate
  • The University moved up six places in the teacher training league tables to 30th in the UK

Career Opportunities

Graduates from this course are in great demand for teaching posts throughout the UK; 99% of students in our first Destination Survey in 2004 achieved teaching jobs upon graduating which is above the sector average.

Teaching/learning methods and strategies

Teaching is delivered through workshops, tutorials, student-led seminars/presentations, guided investigations, practical sessions, role plays and visits to theatres, museums and galleries, field trips, student-led seminars which are a part of a varied approach to teaching aimed at keeping students actively involved with their own learning.

Students work regularly with children in school. There are sessions with practising teachers and many opportunities to try out ideas and materials that could be used in the primary school.

Assessment

Assessment includes coursework, timed exercises, examinations and presentations as well as assessment of practical teaching competence.
