Please note this course is for those over the age of 19 only. If you are a teacher or trainer working in further and adult education or in business, industry or public services, this course gives you the qualification you need. It provides you with the opportunity to understand the background to current education practice as well as gaining all the skills you need to become a successful teacher. This two year course is the route to the Diploma in Education and Training. The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is the equivalent replacement for the previous offer of Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS).

Year 1 This concentrates on establishing your skills as a teacher. The regular taught sessions, workplace support, teaching practice and focused self-evaluation all combine to help you improve your teaching and professional practice We will help you to: Recognise the key challenges as a teacher in the Lifelong Learning Sector and how they relate to your own skills, understanding and capability Recognise and act on your own development needs in Language, Literacy, Numeracy (LLN) and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Lead the planning of your own improvement as a reflective teaching professional Develop a professional approach to all key elements of teaching in ways which will engage and inspire your learners Plan a variety of learning activities, sessions and programmes, and evaluate their effectiveness Assess student learning and evaluate your own effectiveness as a teacher Use strategies, resources and methods for supporting learning with a diverse range of learners on an individual and group basis, and evaluate their effectiveness Develop your understanding and skills within your own specialised area, and apply that in your teaching Year 2 This includes a greater emphasis on the wider context of teaching, and issues facing teachers, whilst maintaining focus on how this impacts on your teaching and its development, and leads to completion of the diploma. You will: Further develop and improve your own teaching and explore new and innovative approaches with your learners and your peers Recognise, take account of and manage a wide range of influences which impact on your curriculum, colleagues and organisation Undertake an extended personal learning project which expands the pedagogy and practice of your own specialist area Plan and commence your own Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Locate your practice within the overall context of post compulsory education Topics include: Teaching, learning and assessment Developing teaching, learning and assessment Theories, principles and models Wider professional practice and development Action research Continuing Personal and Professional Development Teaching in a specialist area The course will be delivered via classroom teaching sessions, small group seminars and one to one tutorials, with further one to one feedback provided during lesson observations. Supporting materials will also be provided on the College’s Virtual Learning Environment.
