“Here in Britain, we’re not training up enough engineers to fill the jobs that we have today, let alone the jobs we’ll need in fifty years’ time. And it’s not a problem limited to the UK; Germany, Switzerland, and the US have all expressed concerns about the shortage of good engineering talent.” Sir James Dyson
The electrical industry is one of the UK's largest industrial sectors and plays a key role in the UK economy. The industry has a growing need for graduate engineers as it makes improvements to the existing electrical supply network, the development of localised power generation, and the integration of renewable energy technologies.
Our Electrical Engineering degree has been designed with input from employers such as Alstom, ABB, Siemens and JCB. You'll develop the core electrical, electronic, mechanical, mathematical, communication and commercial skills that employers want.
The course follows a similar first year to our other engineering degrees. Then, in Year 2 and Year 3, you'll study specialist electrical engineering and power electronic modules. We have strong links with industry, so you could also take an optional industrial placement before your final year.
In your final year, you'll complete a substantial individual electrical engineering project. You'll have the chance to present your work to potential employers at our graduate exhibition and you'll get to participate in local and cross-university events organised by the IET.
Many graduates enter employment when they finish this course. Others continue their studies with a postgraduate research degree such as an MPhil or PhD.
