Modules

Methods of assessment for course overall: 58% coursework

Year 1
  • Engineering mathematics and modelling
This introductory Mathematics unit will develop your understanding of the basic mathematics that will be required for the rest of the course and enhance your understanding of complex real life problems.
  • Engineering principles
This introductory electrical principles unit will build your understanding of the basic circuit theory that will be required for the rest of the course.
  • Design and practice
This module covers practical work, design activities, sustainable development principles, project management, health and safety aspects and risk management, and transferable skills.
  • Introduction to digital electronics
This module explores some introductory material in electronics that a modern Electrical engineer should know before proceeding with the design phase.
  • Engineering computing
This module addresses the engineering formation as well as programming knowledge and skills.
  • Introduction to electrical and electronic engineering
This module covers the essential material relevant to the fundamentals of both electrical and electronic engineering.
Year 2
  • Advanced mathematics
This module covers intermediate undergraduate engineering mathematics to develop the skills and knowledge required for the identification, classification and description of the performance of engineering systems though the use of analytical methods.
  • Circuits, signals and systems
The module introduces methods to mathematically model circuits, signals and systems required for the engineering of electrical, electronic, telecommunication and control systems.
  • Electrical machines and power electronics
This level 5 module explores approaches to the study of electrical machines, 3-phase transformers and power electronic converters. The treatment emphasises the features common to all types of electrical machines and power electronic converters and then develops basic performance equations and equivalent circuits and applies them to common electrical machines and power converters in current use.
  • Electrical services for buildings
This module provides a sound understanding of the important building blocks in electrical building services engineering and apparatus such as transformers, machines, transmission and distribution. The module develops understanding of the regulatory aspects and compliance issues in sizing of electrical plant equipment, including cables, that form part of a building environment.
  • Principles of control
This level 5 module aims to give a sound understanding of a range of topics in Control Systems Engineering. It imparts methods to model and analyse dynamical systems met in the engineering of systems such as robotics, automobiles, aircraft, automatic machinery, and chemical process plants.
  • Team design project
This is a skills-based module developing your understanding of the design process within engineering, including factors that need to be taken into account in identifying and meeting requirements for new products; working within regulatory, professional and standards requirements; developing practical skills; working as part of a team; handling information; project planning and management; and report-writing and presentation skills.
Year 3

Optional placement year

Year 4
  • Innovation and enterprise
You'll work on developing your own ideas for products, with them of them being profitable and achievable. You'll practice ways of finding ideas, testing those ideas and developing them, and will write your own business strategies, risk assessments and scenario testing that demonstrates the commercial viability of your ideas. One of the assignments will require students – working in groups, typically to adopt a concept and develop it such that it could be commercially viable and sustainable. This might be a product or a service (such as consultancy or contract management). You'll also study intellectual property, market research, market placement, advertising and finance.
  • Control engineering
This module introduces a range of analogue and digital control methods to estimate system dynamics and to improve system stability, servo tracking and regulation of system outputs against unknown disturbances.
  • Individual project
You'll plan, execute, review and report upon a major piece of technical work directly related to your degree discipline, so this module provide you with the opportunity to develop a high degree of subject specific expertise.
  • Electrical energy converters and drives
This level 6 unit provides a broad understanding of the theory and application of power electronic circuits in the areas of power conversion and electrical machine drives. It is suitable for students who work in organisations that specify, design, commission, operate and maintain all types of electrical power infrastructure and/or who wish to pursue further study afterwards at Masters level or above.
  • Lighting
This module introduces the areas of lighting as applied to the design of building services. You'll look at completing a specification for a certain set of requirements, work through design calculations and develop skills in appropriate software packages.

Modules are assessed by a mix of workshop logbooks, phase tests, workshop tests, formal reports, individual and group presentations and end of module examinations.
