Press release from the institute of petroleum

New vocational qualification for electrical work at petrol filling stations:
For many years the petroleum industry has been seeking a recognised standard of competence for electrical practitioners at petrol filling stations. Through Institute of Petroleum (IP) representation, the industry has been deeply involved in the creation of the Occupational Standards and the CompEx modules which are now available to practitioners.

The first training and assessment centre to offer nationally recognised training for electrical practitioners working at petrol filling stations has been accredited for CompEx modules EX07 and EX08.

Each candidate completing the training course and wishing to obtain a 'Certificate of Core Competence' is subjected to a multi-matrix written test and assessment of practical work on a test rig. The written test and practical assessment are also available to applicants who believe that they already have sufficient competence. The operation of the CompEx scheme is managed by JTL, the national training provider for the electro-technical industry.

The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) has accredited Occupational Standards at Level 3 for the award of National Vocational Qualifications NVQs (SVQs in Scotland) for electrical work at petrol filling stations. The Standards were prepared by National Electrotechnical Training (NET), the national training organisation for the electrotechnical industry, supported by the Petroleum Industry National Training Organisation (PINTO).

The ‘Petrol Filling Station’ NVQ units are an ‘add-on’ for holders of the core Electrical Installation NVQ. The award of the additional NVQ units to an individual will be dependent on a satisfactory assessment for the centre-based CompEx modules EX07 and EX08, together with an assessment of evidence of prescribed practical experience of working on petrol filling station electrical installation and equipment.
