Designed in collaboration with industry, our exciting multidisciplinary approach offers a broad-based engineering education with specialist skills and knowledge of mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering.
It is an ideal preparation for careers in the energy and power, industrial processing and electromechanical industries, areas where our graduates have found lucrative careers over many years.
Subject guide & modules
In your first two years you will studyalongside our Mechanical Engineering students gaining a broad insight into the fundamental disciplines of mechanical, electrical and design engineering. Programmes are structured to suit students from all backgrounds.
Your final year will incorporate a combination of core material and elective modules, ranging from power systems to quality engineering. Electives will give you the opportunity to study areas of particular personal interest or professional relevance in the electromechanical field. Your final year project can involve design, experimental or analytical work.
Throughout our programmes we emphasise business and communication skills which will enhance your ability to write and present technical essays and reports. This multidisciplinary approach provides an ideal preparation for a career in the energy, industrial processing and electromechanical industries as well as consultancy and business.
Learning, teaching & assessment
You will benefit from a wide range of teaching methods and learning styles, including:

- strong personal tutor system
Assessment is by a combination of exams, continuous assessment and projects. Students are also able to take part in the Formula Student Racing Car Project at which Aston teams have enjoyed a strong track record.
Placement year
Gain relevant industrial experience on our sandwich programme. Your paid professional placement may count towards the training requirements of the Engineering Council and can be taken either in the third year of your programme or before your first year.
Companies currently involved in student placements include, National Grid, RWE npower, Hyundai, BMW and GKN.
Sponsored students usually spend their placement year with their sponsoring company. We can offer advice on sponsorship opportunities and may be able to arrange interviews on your behalf.
Career prospects
The benefits of designing our programmes in cooperation with industry have been amply illustrated by our graduates rapidly progressing to senior management posts in a wide range of companies. Recent graduates have taken up posts in research and design, electricity supply industries (home and abroad), consulting, manufacturing, nuclear power and marketing. Our recent graduates found graduate engineer/consultant positions with companies including Alstom, Ove Arup, Ricardo (Automotive Consultancy), Rolls-Royce, British Energy, Calor Gas and PhD Research.
