Why BEng(Hons) Electronic Engineering?

As a result, qualified electrical and electronic engineers are in demand.
Why Study Our Course?
You will study digital and analogue electronics, mathematics and computer programming, and the application of electronics in a range of environments. As you progress, you will examine signal processing, micro-controllers, communications, control systems and digital hardware design. About this course

Professional accreditation
This course is CEng accredited and fulfils the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer when presented with an accredited MSc. In addition, the course meets the educational requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer.

Course programme

Content

Year 1

The modules in Year 1 are all core, and common to both the electrical and electronic engineering routes. The year builds a solid base in the principles of digital and analogue electronics, and electrical principles. This is underpinned with the study of mathematics and embedded computer programming. Individual and group laboratory work is used to support and integrate the lectures. Project planning, group work and communication skills, all considered highly important by prospective employers, are an integral part of the year.

Year 2

In Year 2, you will study further modules in mathematics, signal processing, micro-controllers, communications and control systems. Interdisciplinary group project and management exercises develop the themes from the first year. You may have the first of your option choices between electrical engineering and electronic engineering. An electrical option will introduce the fundamentals of electrical power systems, motors and drives. An electronic option will study digital hardware design through the use of hardware description languages. This introduces hardware development through the design, implementation and verification of a small microprocessor.

Optional Placement Year

Students who undertake a placement year will complete an industrial placement module.

Final year

In the final year (BEng) (or final two years MEng) there are further pathway specific modules, which allow you to specialise towards your chosen career path. Provided you have performed well, you may choose between the BEng and MEng. Academic staff and student advisers will be on hand to help you make these choices. You will do a significant individual research and development project, which allows you to focus on a specific topic of your own choice, and gives you the chance to put into practice what you have learnt about project management in previous years.

Learning and Teaching

Learning methods include lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratory work, case studies and mini-projects with a mixture of group and individual activities optimised for the particular subject area.

Study time

Part-time students

This course is available to study on a part-time day release basis. Modules are structured to allow you to attend lectures and tutorial sessions one day per week therefore minimising the time spent away from the work place.

Students generally join the course with an HNC in Electronic Engineering or equivalent, which means that you are exempted from Level 1 of the course, and can gain the degree in three to four years at UWE Bristol. The course structure changes year from year, so you might find some variation between here and the final version of your course.

A key benefit of studying part-time means you can put your learning directly into practice, and where possible you can use work-related problems in projects.

Assessment

Assessment is generally by a mixture of coursework, assignments and examinations.
