Subject Overview
Basic Audio Theory
During the opening stages of the programme, students are given enough of an introduction to audio theory to demystify terminology and concepts which will be expanded upon later on in the course.
Studio Equipment
Rudimentary theory and the practical application of common studio equipment are covered, including effects, dynamic range processors, microphones, and loudspeakers.
MIDI, Samplers, Synths and Audio editing
The core focus of the Electronic Music Production certificate explores the four major tools of the trade. Understand MIDI and the tools that allow you to program, and sequence your ideas. Manipulate and create instruments & drum sounds using samplers. Design killer bass sounds and soundscapes using synthesizers. Record vocals and digitally manipulate recordings to your own creative end.
Although students have access to other packages, such as Reason and Cubase, the majority of their sequencing work is carried out using Apple Logic. Electronic music performance is also covered through Ableton Live.
Arrangement/Production
Students learn arrangement techniques for a wide range of electronic music styles. Emphasis is on beat programming, structure/composition, vocal comping and editing, as well as sound design together with creative use of FX.
