What will I study?
In the first year, AS, you will study a core of topics that are fundamental to the subject. These include:
· Basic principles.
· Electronic devices.
· Analogue electronics (transistors and MOSFETs), Op Amps.
· Digital electronics (logic gates and timing circuits).
· Voltage amplifiers and power amplifier systems.
In the second year, A2, the course develops two applications of electronics.
These include:
· Programmable control systems which looks at microprocessors, interfacing and robotic systems.
· Communications systems which looks at radio, digital communication and opto-electronics.
How is the course assessed?
Both years consist of three modules, two of which are theory papers, the third being an internally marked coursework assignment where you design, build, test and write a report on your own circuit.
What enrichment will there be?
Activities include:
· Relevant trips and visits.
· Science Society.
What could I do next?
Most students use their knowledge of electronics in some way after they complete their course; either going onto higher education in electronic engineering or in a related science or technological area.
Electronics is a valuable qualification for careers in computer hardware design and telecommunications and it is an acceptable A-Level for entry into many unrelated courses and professions.
