UNIT 1: BASIC PRINCIPLES AND ETHICS OF WILDLIFE CARE INCLUDING REHABILITATION AND RELEASE
- Caring for injured wildlife
- Ethics of treating and rehabilitating injured wildlife
- Law surrounding the care of wildlife in the United Kingdom
- Process of rehabilitation of wildlife
UNIT 2: CARE AND MANAGEMENT OF BIRDS
- History of common sea birds and birds of prey
- Know when a bird can be treated and released into the wild
- History of common British birds
- Assessing injuries and considering rehabilitation
- Capture and handling techniques for a variety of birds
- Common first aid treatments for birds
UNIT 3: CARE AND MANAGEMENT OF SMALL MAMMALS
- Natural history of common British rodents
- Hedgehogs and bats
- Assessing injured animals
- Natural history of rabbits and hares
- Assessing rabbit and hares injuries and when they can be released
- Capture and handling techniques for a variety of small mammals
- Common first aid treatments for small mammals
UNIT 4: CARE AND MANAGEMENT OF LARGER MAMMALS
- Natural history of foxes and deer’s
- How the history of foxes and deer’s are important when assessing for injuries and release
- Capture and handling techniques for a variety of mammals
- Common first aid for larger mammals
UNIT 5: CARE AND MANAGEMENT OF MARINE MAMMALS
- Natural history of cetaceans
- How the history of cetaceans are important when assessing for injuries and release
- Capture and handling techniques for a variety of marine mammals
- Common first aid treatments for marine mammals
UNIT 6: REHABILITATION
- Rehabilitation consideration and release methods
- Rehabilitation and release of birds
- Rehabilitation and release of mammals
- Rehabilitation and release of marine mammals
Learners will be required to complete a series of tutor marked assignments ( normally 1 after each unit) as they progress through this course. Each assignment will contain a variety of tasks/questions. These assignments are assessed by your tutor to monitor progress. You will be provided with constructive feedback to help you in completing each unit to the required standard.
