The NCFE Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of End of Life Care course is aimed at those who are looking for or just starting out in the healthcare sector. It is also relevant to any health or social care worker who wishes to improve their understanding of end of life care.
The qualification looks at the knowledge and understanding of the key principles of caring for patients approaching the end of their lives in a wide range of care settings, including hospices, care homes, care in the community and primary care. End of life care provides support for people approaching death, enabling them to live their lives as well as possible until they die.
The benefit of this qualification is the achievement of a nationally recognised level 3 qualification, progression within your job role and continual professional development. You will learn in your own time at a pace that suits you and you will not have to attend college. You will be provided with high-quality and engaging support materials that provide the course content.
This qualification is made up of a set of learning outcomes and assessment criteria that describe what you need to be able to do, and things you need to know to achieve your qualification.
The qualification consists of 5 mandatory units. You will work through three modules that include all the course material that you need for the 5 units. Once you have completed each module you will be required to complete unit assessments that provide evidence of your knowledge and understanding in:

- Understand different attitudes towards death and dying
- Understand the aims of end of life care
- Understand current approaches to end of life care
- Know the range of support services available to individuals and their families
The learning outcomes for this unit are:
- Understand communication skills in the context of end of life care
- Understand how to overcome barriers to communication
The learning outcomes for this unit are:
- Understand the holistic approach to end of life care
- Understand person centred assessment and planning
- Understand advance care planning
The learning outcomes for this unit are:
- Understand the effects of symptoms in relation to end of life care
- Understand a range of therapeutic options used to support effective symptom
- Understand the principles of pain management
- Understand techniques for supporting a person with their social needs
- Understand how to support a person’s spiritual, religious and cultural needs
- Understand techniques for supporting a person with their psychological and emotional needs
- Understand people’s responses to dying
The learning outcomes for this unit are:
- Understand how to offer appropriate support in the final hours of life
- Understand how to care for the deceased person
- Understand the process of grief and loss
- Understand how to support people following bereavement
This is only an approximate figure and is dependant upon how much time you can dedicate to your studies and how well you grasp the learning concepts in the course material. Furthermore, at the end of each lesson there is a question paper that needs to be completed and returned to your tutor. You should allow at least 1 - 2 hours of study to complete each question paper.
