The programme is designed to provide students with a detailed knowledge of the technology required to ensure energy provision in the Oil & Gas industry. Students gain both a theoretical and practical grounding for future managers of energy projects. It is taught by specialist staff drawn from Engineering, Geography & Environment, Geology, and Plant & Soil Science, who are each highly regarded in their field of expertise. Suitable for: Students with mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical and other suitable engineering backgrounds. In special cases, the Programme is also made available to those with relevant science backgrounds.

About this course

Our minimum entry requirement for this programme is a UK Honours degree (or an honours degree from a non-UK institution which is judged by the University to be of equivalent worth) in any branch of Engineering at a 2:1 (upper second) class or above. International applicants are also required to provide proof of proficiency in English (6.5 in IELTS examination or 580 in TOEFL)

Course programme

Syllabus

The taught part of the programmes consist of two half-sessions: the first running from September to late January, and the second from late January to mid June. The two half-sessions comprise courses that are taught by staff from the Schools of Engineering, Geology & Petroleum Geology. In addition, a number of industrially-based external lecturers contribute to the Programme to give examples of how theoretical concepts are currently being applied in industry.

First Half session

  • Well & Reservoir Engineering
  • Fundamental Concepts in Safety Engineering

Second Half session

  • Oil and Gas Chemistry
  • Project Management & Group Project
  • Facilities Engineering
  • Town and Country Planning in the Energy Sector
  • Remediation in the Energy Sector
  • Facilities Engeneering

Energy Futures Dissertation

  • From June to September, students will work on a dissertation which is, where possible, undertaken while on an industrial placement. The subject for a student's dissertation will be chosen following discussion between staff and the student and in the light of placement availability.

Assessment

The principal method of student assessment is through written examinations. Examinations for the first half-session courses are in last two weeks of January and those for the second half-session are in May. Some courses conducted by the Geology Department have the exams during the course of the semester. Candidates are normally expected to pass all examinations and all projects submissions.

Teaching

Those students who complete only the taught part of a programmes will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma which takes nine months. Those who continue to the Dissertation and are successful in this will be awarded an Master of Science (MSc) in Energy Futures (Oil and Gas).
