About this course

You will need to be 16 years old and normally have at least 4 GCSEs (grade A-C) or equivalent or Intermediate GNVQ. Preferably including Science and Maths, and an interest in engineering.

Qualifications Available:

Three qualifications are available:

  • Advanced Subsidiary (Graded A-E)

Course Outline:

The engineering course aims to help you understand the nature and demands of different areas of engineering whilst developing an understanding of engineering technologies and the complex sub-groups that make up engineering and the related industries.

It will help you to apply your understanding of engineering and its practical and technological aspects, through project-based study of engineering design, production, commissioning and maintenance.

Method of Delivery:

You will take part in projects (both real and simulations) to investigate and develop engineering skills.

Future Prospects:

This course can allow you to progress into Higher Education in a wide range of subjects. It also gives you a wide choice of possible future careers in the private and public sector.

Course Content:

Students complete modules in:

  • Engineering Materials, Processes and Techniques
  • The Role of the Engineer
  • Principles of Design, Planning and Prototyping

Assessment Methodology:

Two thirds of the modules are assessed through completion of a portfolio, with the remaining units being assessed through external examinations. Assessment is continuous throughout the school year.
