Course programme
This course has a September, January and May intake.
The Engineering BSc has three intakes during the year. The main intake is in September but you may be able to begin in January or may, as modules are taught in 16 week blocks, typically 11 teaching weeks, 3 study weeks and 2 weeks at the end of the module for planned exams (if applicable to the module).
HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?You can take between 2-3 modules per year. It is therefore up to you how many modules you attend and therefore how quickly you complete your degree.
You have a maximum of 6 years to complete your degree but most part-time students on this degree will complete within 3-4 years.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?Assessments can be made up of courseworks and examinations. Some modules include both aspects while others include only courseworks. Coursework assignments can take many different forms, e.g. written report, individual or group presentation, in-class test, and you will experience a variety of these. These coursework assignments can fall any time within the teaching block; at times, module leaders may set a coursework submission date after the end of teaching also.
Examinations take place within the pre-defined examination weeks. These normally run across a two week period per semester; with the examinations gererally falling on a friday afternoon within the examination period concerned but this is not a guarantee.
TEACHING CONTACT HOURSThe quantity of time relates to your background knowledge (at the start of the module), the speed at which you learn the specific material being taught and, to some extent, the structure of the module. As an example, a module with multiple pieces of coursework will typically require you to be working steadily throughout the 11-week term, whereas a module with one piece of coursework and an exam may allow you (or require you) to put in more effort at particular times during the module.
Each 20 credit module equates to about 200 hours of time (this is the total of in-class time, time for coursework and your own study time). This time is for guidance, as each student will find each module different.
The following table can be used as a guide to number of modules that are required to be studied under normal course entry and exit circumstances.
