The Engineering Manufacture framework at level 3 is designed to provide you with the skills, knowledge and competence requirements to operate at craft or technician level as appropriate within your employment sector.

On successful completion of the apprenticeship programme you may progress on Higher Education depending on your employer's needs.

Training and assessment will take place at College during your first year (this may involve full time or part time college attendance) followed in the second subsequent year by college based day release.  Your will also undertake work based training, as appropriate, throughout the length of your apprenticeship programme.

As an apprentice you are required to achieve the following competence and knowledge based qualifications to ensure that you build a rounded set of skills.

Competence qualification

Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma in a relevant engineering pathway.

Knowledge qualification

Level 3 Technical Diploma

Apprentices must complete or have completed the following transferable Functional Skills, English, Mathematics and ICT at Level 2.

Employee Responsibilities and Rights (ERR) Level 2.

Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) Level 2.

Level 3 City and Guilds 2850 Diploma in engineering.  There are three possible options offered.

1. Maintenance, Installation and Commissioning (2850-33)

What qualifications will I get?

A full Semta Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Engineering Certificate

How will I be assessed?

The College based qualifications will be achieved by either successful completion of assignments, online exams, practical workshop tests or by portfolios of work.

Exemption from some of the Functional skills is given for suitable GCSE grades.

The NVQ 3 Extended Diploma qualification is achieved in the workplace by portfolio evidence coupled with assessment of competence by an approved assessor

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications: Not applicable

To be an Apprentice you must have suitable employment before  your Apprenticeship can begin. Completion of the Level 2 Apprenticeship, or 3-5 GCSE's at Grade A-C including English, Maths and Science (Employers may require higher GCSE grades).

You will be fully employed by your company in a real job and receive a salary or wage from day one. A Level 3 apprenticeship typically takes 3-4 years to complete. There are no age limits as to who can be an apprentice, but the level of government funding does vary according to your age and the size of your Employer, 16-18 is currently fully funded, any contributions by the employer for other age groups will vary according to funding arrangements. Apprenticeships are the main route into careers for school leavers.

Most employers now recruit their future technical and craft specialists into apprenticeship positions to give them the best possible start and enable them to become valuable members of their company's team as soon as possible. Undertaking an apprenticeship will give you a structured career development programme, that is fully supported by the engineering industry. It will ensure you gain the skills, experience and qualifications you need to progress in your chosen engineering occupation.
