About this course

There are no formal entry requirements. Though completion of the Young Apprenticeship programme or the NVQ Level 1 or an interest in mechanical things (bicycles, engines etc) as well as enthusiasm and motivation are advantageous. Previous hand tool experience would also be useful. Students without the entry requirements will undergo an aptitude test to decide the appropriate level of qualification.

Course programme

Course Outline:

This course caters for a variety of engineering environments and allows you the opportunity to develop mechanical and fabrication skills. Your time will be split between the workplace and the workshop at Appleby Heritage Centre.

Whilst in the workshop you will be able to develop your skills as you carry out maintenance around the Centre as well as through working alongside staff on commercial contracts won by the Centre.

These contracts can range from the refurbishment of historic artefacts for the National Railway Museum, to helping to renovate railway carriages for customers such as Beamish Open Air Museum and Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway.

Course Content:

The NVQ is made up of a number of units that will enable you to demonstrate that you are competent in performing a number of engineering tasks.

Performing Engineering Operations (2251) - Level 2 & 3

Mandatory Units:

  • Working safely in an engineering enivronment
  • Working efficiently and effectively in engineering
  • Using and communicating technical information

Optional Units - three from:

  • Producing mechanical engineering drawings using a CAD system
  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques
  • Preparing and using lathes for turning operations
  • Maintaining mechanical devices and systems
  • Preparing and using manual metal arc welding equipment

These units enable you to develop the general skills required when working in a workshop environment as well as giving the specialised training in shaping products using hand tools.

Method of Delivery and Assessment:

To gain the full NVQ you will need to complete all units. Each unit is assessed separately so that unit certificates may be awarded where necessary.
