The English for Business BA programme is designed to develop your proficiency in the English language to a high level, especially when applied to the world of business. It also develops your ability to reflect on the theories and practices of the world of business, especially in an international context.
WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?
The course is a one-year “stand-alone” Year 3 top up (or direct entry) course.
The course allows the study of business to be combined with the study of English, both at an advanced level.
- Your study in English will strengthen your effectiveness in business communication in a global environment.
- Your study of Business will allow you examine advanced level topics, relating theory and practice, in an international context.
The course offers a range of English, Business and English for Business subjects:
- Global Marketing;
- Global Business;
- Corporate Strategy Management;
- Supply Chain Management Strategy;
- English in the World;
- Language and Society in Modern Britain;
- English Language in Use;
- Advanced Business English.
You choose six subjects. You need to have studied your chosen subjects previously, as this is a top up (or direct entry) course.
HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?Business subjects will be taught in lectures, with associated seminars and workshop practical classes.
English will be taught in small and medium-sized groups that allow the development of advanced oral proficiency.
Students are encouraged to participate actively in seminars and discussions.
The Languages Centre provides a wealth of materials for academic English and is a pleasant place to interact with language learners from all over the world.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?A range of assessment modes are used and will vary according to the nature of the subjects chosen. Examinations form part of the assessment for most modules at this level. Coursework essays, business reports, individual and group oral presentations and role-plays are also used.
TEACHING CONTACT HOURSIn a typical week you will normally have up to 14 hours of teaching contact with staff. In addition, you can meet with your personal tutor or lecturing staff during published “office hours sessions” which will allow you to discuss problems or investigate further topics that interested you in a lecture.
An average teaching week will depend on your choice of subjects, but it may break down as:
- personal/small group teaching – 2 hours of individual or small group teaching;
- medium group teaching – 5 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each week;
- large group teaching – 7 hours of lectures each week.
In addition you should expect to spend about 24 hours a week on online, guided and independent study.
