About the course

English is a particularly accessible subject and is a very popular choice of degree course both in the UK and worldwide. It is a subject which can be studied at a meaningful and rewarding level by people of all ages and from a wide range of backgrounds. English may be studied enjoyably as a single subject in its own right but it also combines well with a wide range of other disciplines.

The English course at Bolton has been established for well over thirty years, and is taught by a dedicated experienced team with a developed range of research interests and a good record of publication in the field.

Each student is allocated to a personal tutor, who oversees the process of personal development planning during the whole period of study, and is also available for academic counselling, for example to advise on module choice, or to deal with problems relating to the submission of work for assessment purposes. There is also a network of trained counsellors who are able to give advice on more personal matters affecting study.

Teaching takes place in slots throughout the day with the bulk of classes within the 10am-3pm period. Each module has a two-hour seminar plus a “flexible” hour which may be used for a variety of purposes including formal lectures and tutorials. For modules held in the evening, the “flexible” hour is timetabled from 6-7pm, with the seminar following at 7-9pm.

What you will learn

The English study programme is based on two kinds of module: Core (compulsory) and Option. Core modules ensure that you get a common grounding in the skills and techniques of literary analysis, gain familiarity with a range of literary forms and different kinds of writing, and develop a sense of historical period and developing literary traditions. Option modules provide opportunities for you to complement, extend and diversify the knowledge and skills gained in the core modules, and to develop personal interests and make choices relevant to your intended career.

You will acquire skills in literary analysis, coupled with clear and accurate expression, both written and oral. At Level 3 you will acquire advanced research skills which will be put to use in researching a topic of your own choice for the dissertation – an extended piece of work of between 7,000 and 10,000 words.

What you will study

Level 1

You will be introduced to the work of a number of authors including Shakespeare, Jane Austen , Arthur Miller and Carol Ann Duffy, and will develop your ability to use critical and theoretical approaches to analyse and understand texts.

Level 2

You will study core texts from a range of historical periods in poetry, prose and drama and can also choose from various options including modules in literary theory and more career-orientated modules such as English in the Classroom.

Level 3

You can select from a wide range of options including topics of your own choosing via the Dissertation.

We encourage our Level 2 or 3 students to take part in the Student Associates Scheme. This paid work experience placement allows you to gain classroom experience in a school and decide if you are interested in teaching. It's particularly valuable if you are thinking of studying towards a PGCE after you graduate and will strengthen your application. Find out more by visiting the 'Student Associates Scheme' web pages listed in the 'Related Links' section at the top of this page.

Special features

  • Single Honours students with the intention of entering the teaching profession have the opportunity to build into their programme a "long thin strand" of education-orientated modules which will provide a useful springboard into the PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) and subsequent employment.
  • At Level 2 you may take a Career Planning and Development module, and at Level 3 there are opportunities for work-based learning (which will be a school placement for those following the education strand).
  • The University has exchange arrangements with some European universities which provides the wonderful opportunity to spend a full semester studying abroad (teaching is in English and funding may be available - visit our Related Links section for a link to our 'study abroad' web pages for further information).
  • The University has a professional partnership with the Octagon Theatre, Bolton, one of the country's leading regional theatres, bringing many benefits including work placements, and free or low-price theatre tickets. The Octagon Theatre Prize is awarded annually for achievement in writing drama, and includes a workshop with professional actors and director followed by a public performance of the winning play.

Careers and professional development

The study of English confers many benefits. It especially extends the imagination, promotes appreciation of the expressive resources of language and develops understanding of verbal creativity. It enables readers to engage in dialogue with past and present cultures and with contexts other than their own. English graduates have learned to work independently and with confidence. They have skills valued by employers in written and spoken communication and in critical thinking.

As one of the principal humanities subjects on the National Curriculum a degree in English is an excellent starting point for entry into the teaching profession. English graduates also have a good record of securing employment in a range of other careers, including general management, research and consultancy, as well as in the publishing and creative industries.

Professional recognition

The University is a BBC Educational Partner and a number of our students have won placements there. The Octagon Theatre in Bolton and Write Out Loud, the poetry organisation are linked in creative partnership with the University. Our English courses are central to these groundbreaking partnerships.

In addition to this, some of the modules you will study may provide credits towards Qualified Teacher Status.
