Many employers, universities and higher courses insist on it as a basic entry qualification. You will have the opportunity to redraft your coursework so that you can achieve a good mark before you sit the two final exams in June.

With a combination of other GCSE's you will be able to progress onto AS courses or other level 3 courses such as BTEC and GNVQ.




You will either have gained a 'D' grade previously or have taken a test as part of your application and interview process. The evening course is aimed at those in, or seeking, full time employment.

Course programme

You will study the use of English, some basic grammar rules, plus spelling and sentence construction for the first few weeks then you will start on your assessed coursework. You will also cover essay writing skills and exam techniques.



Course Assessment Method

There are at least two internal assessements throughout the academic year plus a Mock exam in the Spring Term. The exam board also requires students to write 3 pieces of coursework and to complete 3 pieces of oral coursework plus sit one examination in the summer.

Course elements include:

  • Personal Writing;
  • Writing about a modern novel;
  • Writing about spoken language.
