Information about the course

The course aims to enable you to develop your skills in reading, writing and understanding the English language, and to achieve a GCSE qualification.

Course content

1 How to understand the spoken word and develop the capacity to express yourself effectively in a variety of speaking and listening activities, matching style and response to audience and purpose.

2 How to read accurately and fluently; understand and respond to and enjoy literature of increasing complexity drawn from the English Literary heritage and from other cultures and traditions; and analyse and evaluate a wide range of texts.

3 How to construct and convey meaning in written language using correct grammar and standard English, matching style to audience and purpose.

Additionality

Students will need to provide their own textbooks (play and novel), as specified by the tutor.

Assessment

Coursework represents 20 of the overall grade - both oral and written (1500 words) assessment

One question testing reading and response to media texts
One question testing reading and response to non-fiction texts
One question testing the ability to write an argument

Exam Paper 2 (2 hours):
One question testing reading and response to texts from other cultures
One question testing analytical writing
One question testing persuasive writing
