What is the English GCSE course? This English GCSE course is a one year Mature Syllabus course which is specially targeted at people who have left school.
It is preferable for you to have already achieved a grade D in English GCSE before embarking on the course. However, if you are an adult returning to education you may have found you need a more up-to-date qualification than the one you have already, or maybe you missed out the first time around.
If you lack confidence you may benefit from attending an -Improve your English- course first before embarking on the GCSE.
Course topics
You will follow various forms of practical writing tasks:
- Essays
- Articles
- Letters
- Reports
In lessons, you will read and discuss media, non-fiction and literary texts. There will also be many opportunities to develop oral skills in a variety of class situations, including plenty of discussion work in small or larger groups. You will be encouraged to identify any errors in your technique and help will be on hand to correct them.
You will also be required to produce pieces of creative writing such as descriptions and stories. There will be homework set each week which will be handed in the following week.
Assessment details
Coursework will represent 40% of your final grade and will be in the format of half written and half oral.
- You will submit four written pieces of 2000 words.
- Grades for three different oral assignments will be submitted.
- 60% of your final grade will consist of two examinations of two hours in duration.
NB This is funded as an examination board course and students should expect to enter the examinations.

Notes
This is a Learning & Skills Council (LSC) funded course and you may be exempt from the tuition fee, however you would be required to pay the examination fee at the time of enrolment. Tuition fees for overseas students may vary from those quoted.
Extra costs : A good English dictionary, A4 file, writing materials and lined file paper to be brought to the first and subsequent lessons.
