What will I study?
The emphasis of this course is on improving writing, speaking, listening, and reading and comprehension skills. You will study a range of texts from many fields of interest. You will learn to analyse language more precisely and will use your knowledge to improve your own practical writing skills for a variety of audiences and purposes.
Duration:
One year
Do I need any additional qualifications/ skills?
Students will read and study a variety of works, including traditional literary texts such as Shakespeare and poetry. In order to achieve the best possible grade students should be prepared to use the available resources and their own time to improve written accuracy.
How will I be assessed?
Students are required to submit four pieces of coursework. These will consist of personal writing as well as writing on literary texts. Students study an anthology of prose and poetry extracts, which is incorporated into the final examination. 40% of the course is assessed by coursework. 60% of the final mark is assessed by two examinations. There is no option for a November re-sit.
What can I do afterwards?
As a guarantee of competence in reading, writing, speaking and listening, a good grade at GCSE English is an essential qualification required by universities and most employers. All students on advanced courses at the College who do not have a grade C or above in English should re-take this subject. Level 2 (eg GCSE+) students will need a minimum of grade C at English to progress to an A Level course.
Are there any additional costs involved?
For students in the 16-19 cohort there are usually no costs associated with this course, although students may wish to purchase set texts, textbooks and revision guides independently. Students in the adult groups are expected to buy copies of the set texts.
