About this course

Grade D/E in English GCSE would be an acceptable start point. Proof of grade is asked at enrolment. In addition a Key Skill diagnostic test result indicating readiness for Level 2 Communication is a component of interview. We may accept those with no formal qualifications if you can demonstrate good literacy skills.

English GCSE Level 2

About the course:
A one year course. Currently run on one morning a week for approximately two and a half hours. In addition to the in-class time, students are expected to commit two/three hours of additional study per week for the completion of homework, additional tasks for prepartion, (see below for additional information.) There is one-intake per academic year: September. Further information about this programme is available from the Curriculum Team.

Course Content:
Students read and respond to a wide variety of material, including non-literary and media texts, literary prose, poetry and a Shakespearean play (AQA Syllabus). Coursework comprises five written assignments in a variety of forms and styles. In addition there are three formally assessed speaking and listening activities.

Learning Style:
Predominantly visual and auditory.

Equipment Requirements:
It is recommended that learners purchase their own copies of Macbeth, the Shakespeare play that is currently studied on the course. Students are expected to provide their own paper and pens. Handout materials are provided.

Assessment:
Written assignments and oral work form coursework worth 40%. Examinations account for 60% of the overall assessment. Exam entry is dependent upon coursework completion and attendance of 80%.

Progression:
A level 3 programme such as Access to Higher Education may be an appropriate progression.

Additional Information:
Attendance - part-time one session per week. Private study will be required in addition. If you feel that a GCSE in one year is too daunting, then there is an opportunity to study at a preparatory level first. If you are on a qualifying means tested benefit the tuition fees for some courses can be reduced, however you will still need to pay for Exams and College costs. You must claim tuition fee remission with proof before enrolment.

Enrolment Instructions:
An interview will be required by the English team, before enrolment onto this course. You will need to obtain a 60% achievement from a college specific timed test. This is arranged by and carried out within the interview.

Late enrolments are possible although there is a cut off of two weeks after the start date of the course.
