English GCSE - Level 2 Overview

On the English GCSE you will develop your written and spoken language skills. You will also read a wide range of texts that will cover the English language in a variety of forms and aim to achieve a qualification that is highly valued by employers in a range of working environments.

Entry requirements

This course is aimed at those who have achieved a GCSE English Grade D previously or equivalent.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment involves internal assessments as well as an examination component. You will also need to take part in three speaking and listening activities.

What does the course lead to?

Possible progression onto A Level English Language and English Literature if you achieve an A-C grade.

What will I study?

Internal assessments will cover the following topics:

  • 'Macbeth' by William Shakespeare
  • 'Lord of the Flies' by William Golding
  • Poetry from a different culture or tradition
  • Moving images (writing for or about moving images)
  • Me, myself and I (writing about personal experience).

The exam will cover:

  • Reading and responding to texts
  • Writing to inform, explain, describe, argue and persuade.
