Course programme

Exciting new courses for 2014-15

All students starting A-level English courses will be following the new specifications introduced by the exam boards, in line with government policy.  We will be offering two year A-levels only (whereas the split AS and A2 model of delivery will still be on offer for many other subjects in the College, as they are not all in the first wave of government changes).
For English, the new programmes will give us the time to explore subjects, texts and language in greater depth and will enable students to develop their understanding and skills more fully.  It also means there will be no ‘real’ exams at the end of the first year.
We are excited to be able to offer a wider range of texts and some innovative modules as part of the new courses.
All of the courses are centred on developing writing skills and styles, close reading of texts, interactive teaching and individual support for students.

It is possible, subject to progression guidance from the College, to take A-level English Language and A-level English Literature alongside each other as separate A-levels, but the A-level English Language & Literature course cannot be combined with either of the other two A-levels.
All three courses involve 80% exam and 20% coursework.
The entry requirements for A-level English courses are subject to the usual College minimum requirements, including having a grade C in the related GCSE course.
It will not be possible in 2014-15 to take any of the A-level English courses as an express one-year course, as this is a transition year for new and old exam specifications.

For the new English Language course, there will be a diverse range of interesting modules, which cover different types of spoken and written language.  There are no set texts for the course, but the Department will provide or direct students to very many stimulating and challenging resource materials.  This course very much focuses on the analysis of language and helps students to develop their linguistic skills and knowledge.  There is also a creative writing element, which provides students with the opportunity to produce and develop their own work.  The main emphasis, however, is to equip students with the tools to de-construct how language is used in a variety of contexts and this provides really useful skills for higher education and professional employment.  If you don’t know what a pre-modifying adjective or dynamic verb is at the start of the course, you certainly will – and a whole lot more linguistic terminology – by the end!
