The Programme
This is a course which will appeal to students who are interested in how our language works. You will study a wide variety of different texts, both spoken and written. There will also be opportunities to develop creative writing skills.
The Programme Content
This course is about studying how language works and why people use language in the way they do. You will study a wide range of texts, fiction and non fiction, and learn how to analyse them. You will also study language topics such as Language & Gender, Language & Technology and Language & Power. Your coursework is based on a folder of your own writing where you will write for a variety of audiences and purposes. Your own writing is accompanied by a commentary where you explain the language choices you made.
Progression / Careers
You may wish to go on to study linguistics at university. Also, English is highly regarded as an A Level for a range of degrees where skills of analysis and creativity are valued. Students who have studied this A Level in the past have gone on to follow careers in journalism, the media, teaching, advertising and marketing.
