English Language allows students to explore the ways in which meanings are created in spoken, written and electronic forms of communication. Students practise evaluating the impact of grammatical structures in a range of data extracts ranging from social 'chat' to academic materials. Exploring linguistic features enables students to understand how language shapes and creates viewpoints. Language debates are a key element of the course including youth language, texting and gender variation.

What you need to know
How will I study?

Students study linguistic features including: grammar, lexis (word choice), phonology (sounds), semantics (meanings) and pragmatics (meanings in context). How to evaluate the use of these features in a range of written, spoken and electronic forms of communication is studied. The issue of varying representations and how they are constructed for a range of different target audiences is studied. Students develop research skills by selecting, analysing and creating written extracts that create and challenge stereotypes. Students study a range of theories about how children develop language. These include Behaviourist, Nativist and Cognitive theories. They study stages of development, linguistic examples and additional studies such as the 'Wug test' and 'Fis experiment.'
How will I be taught?

Lessons are designed to meet a range of learning styles and memory techniques. Activities include: discussion, matching tasks, problems solving tasks, presentations, 'you tube', radio and video extracts, linguistic 'games', tests, comprehension and other reading and writing tasks. Lessons include individual, pair and group tasks.
How will I be assessed?

The A-level is assessed through 5 hours of examinations at the end of this 2 year linear course. There is also a 20% coursework component. You will be assessed at the end of year one to see if you can progress to year two.
