The Programme
In this qualification, you will develop your skills in analysing literature as well as studying how language works. There are also opportunities to develop your interests in creative writing through coursework. You should have an interest in reading and analysing texts as well as a desire to develop your skills as a writer.
The Programme Content
For AS Level you will study a novel, either Restoration or The Colour Purple. You will also study spoken language in a variety of forms. You will complete a coursework folder of two pieces of your own creative work both for a listening audience and a reading audience together with a commentary. For A2 you will study the poetry of Thomas Hardy and the poetry of John Betjemen as well as a wide variety of non fiction texts. For coursework you will study Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and complete two creative pieces of writing inspired by the play and a commentary.
Progression / Careers
You may wish to use your A Level to gain a university place. English is a subject which is highly regarded everywhere. Students who have studied this A Level have gone on to follow careers in areas such as journalism, publishing, the media, teaching and marketing.
