Course programme

English Language and Literature AS and A2

Subject category:
English and Communication

What will I study?

Duration:
One year for AS Level and a further year to complete A Level.

Do I need any additional qualifications/ skills?
You should enjoy reading a wide range of material, both fiction and non-fiction. This course will focus on modern writing and therefore will not include pre-1900 texts, so it may not provide the range of material that is appropriate as preparation for a degree in English Literature. We are currently studying modern plays, including The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde and 'A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, in addition to a contemporary novel, 'The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. The combined English course is accepted for entry to a wide range of university courses, including some English degrees.

How will I be assessed?
This course is assessed by a combination of coursework (at A2) and exam. At AS, assessment is by exam only: Unit 1: Integrated Analysis and Text Production Unit 2: Analysing Speech and Its Representation At A2, assessment is by exam and coursework: Unit 3: Comparative Analysis and Text Adaptation Unit 4: Comparative Analysis through Independent Study (coursework)

What can I do afterwards?
This course is a good preparation for higher education or full-time employment in a range of professions, including law, media and journalism, public relations and teaching.

Are there any additional costs involved?
You will be asked to buy your set texts. The total cost each year will be about £20. There may be opportunities to visit the theatre and attend study days in London, for which there will be a charge to cover tickets and travel.
