English Language and Literature - AS/A2 Level
NCS course code: AS-ASENGAP/A2-A2ENGAP
Aim To enable students to study language and literature using an anthology of literary and non-literary texts. Further study focuses upon the ways in which different writers have approached similar subjects and the ways in which language and style are affected by change over time and contextual variation. At A2, coursework is used to enable students to apply the knowledge, understanding and insights gained from literary and linguistic studies to transform an original work into a different genre/sub-genre. Drama texts are included at A2 level.
Content Year 1 - AS level
Unit 1: Introduction to language and literature study
· The study of thematically linked, spoken and written texts, which will offer candidates the opportunity to consider the three major literary genres and a range of non-literary texts
· The study of the significant features of writers, uses of language and their attitudes towards a specified theme.
Unit 2: Theme in languages and literature - coursework
· A study of the major prose genres, including fiction and literary non-fiction
· Developing reading and writing skills through the study of the writers craft
· Study of paired prescribed texts.
Year 2 - A level
Unit 3: Talk in life and literature
· The skills and knowledge of literary and linguistic concepts
· The study of construction, conveyance and interpretation of meanings in speech and drama.
Unit 4: Coursework - text transformation
· Study of texts from prescribed list and their transformation into different genre/sub genre
Progression/career opportunities
The successful completion of this course will allow students to progress on to a range of related Higher Education courses or into a range of careers including, for instance, publishing or marketing.
Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
