English Language & Literature, AS-level
AS & A Level
About the Course
English Language and Literature enables you to study language and literature as connected subjects so that your understanding and enjoyment of both will grow. You will learn to use linguistic and literary concepts in your reading of texts and to relate texts to the contexts in which they were written. You will be encouraged to develop as an independent, confident and reflective reader as well as to develop your writing skills to produce texts for a variety of audiences and purposes.
At AS Level you will study two plays and a novel. In Unit 1 you will answer a question based on one text and produce a piece of writing based on a second text. In Unit 2 you will analyse talk in an unseen extract and in a set text. There is no course work.
At A2 you will study two set texts. In Unit 3 you will answer one question on a set text as well as responding to a variety of unseen texts. For course work in Unit 4 you will write a comparative essay on two texts, one of which will be poetry.
You will be taught by well qualified, experienced teachers in a lively and supportive department that offers a regular programme of visits to performances and to study days. You will be encouraged to work independently and to contribute to discussions. Clean texts will be provided for examinations. You are advised to purchase your own texts for annotation.
