English Language - GCSE

What are the main features of this course?
This is a one year course leading to the GCSE in English Language. You will learn new skills to increase your confidence in reading, writing and speaking. You will meet enthusiastic, professional teachers able to advise and guide you in your learning. You will get the chance to read a selection of poetry, drama and novels as well as non-finction. Your class teacher will encourage you to enjoy your reading and to reflect on the ideas, facts and opinions you find there. You will also get plenty of opportunity to practise your essay writing skills so you can do well in the exam. Your learning will take place in our English class and will be through well organised, purposeful group work and one-to-one teacher contact. We will give you support through DVD and I.T. facilities in the Department. Your learning will be stimulated by visits to see plays and films and through contact with visiting authors. You will get lots of scope to discuss your favourite reading and to develop your own writing.
Shorter/intensive versions of this course may also be offered as an alternative and can be provided in the evenings by arrangement.

How is the course assessed?
You will do a mix of coursework (40%) and two final exams (60%). 20% of the coursework marks are based on spoken English
