The new GCSE course involves both reading and writing.  You will have write stories of 500 to 600 words as well as newspaper articles, letters and reports of 300 to 400 words. The reading tasks will involve answering a set of questions on extracts of writing, including articles from the past, testing your understanding of the pieces and your ability to analyse how they are written.   The new grading system runs from 9 to 1 (with 9 at the top) and the aim will be to get everyone at least a grade 4.  There is a Speaking and Listening element but it is marked separately and is nothing to worry about.  You won’t be forced to speak in front of the whole class!

Course programme

The course we teach is a very varied one that allows you to develop a range of crucial skills. There are two exams, both of which involve reading and writing.  You will have to answer a set of questions on a passage. On the second paper, one of them is from the past but they choose ones that aren’t too difficult to understand.  The questions tests your understanding but also your awareness of how the pieces are written.  The writing tasks involve writing a story – you are just given a title or an opening line – as well as writing something more formal such as a newspaper article or a report.  There’s no coursework at all so we have plenty of time to help you improve not only your accuracy (spelling and grammar) but also your confidence in expressing yourself on paper. We do lots of writing in class but you often have a choice of what you want to write.  You also do some Speaking and Listening but it is not very formal (you won’t have to do a talk to a big group!) and the mark is given separately.  The new system of grading goes from 9 (which is the top) to 1 and we are keen to ensure that everyone gets to at least a 4 (which is the equivalent of a C at present). Finally, it should be stressed that, as a department, we are really keen to help all students improve their grade and believe that, with a little bit of work and a lot of support from us, everyone can do this!
