ENGLISH LANGUAGE Intermediate/GCSE
Course outline
Speaking and Listening: 3 assignments including discussion and role play.
Reading and Writing: 4 assignments including Personal Writing; Shakespeare and Prose.
Candidates doing this course should learn to write accurately, read for meaning and engage in discussion and drama.
Teaching styles
Discussion, group work, exam practices are all used in the delivery of this course
Assessment
Assessment is by coursework folder worth 40% and 2 written examinations worth 60% of the final grade.
Subject combinations
This course complements all others, whether Humanities or Science based.
Key features
GCSE English Language is vital to success at all levels. Students learn to write precisely under pressure: this is highly relevant to advanced study. Developing reading skills and verbal confidence are also critical to achievement beyond GCSE level.
Students also have the opportunity to attend enrichment activities outside of college. For example, this year students saw Romeo and Juliet at Birmingham Rep, Macbeth at the Haymarket and participated in GCSE Poetry Live!
Entry requirements
GCSE English D or English Language Certificate Level 2 and/or 3.
As part of a level 2 programme a minimum of 5 grade Ds at GCSE, or equivalent, including English Language
