This course offers an integrated approach to the study of language and literature. It will encourage you to explore the way language choices create different impressions of the world in a range of literary and non-literary texts, and quite literally, how words create worlds. You will study an anthology of texts offering different perceptions of Paris. While we can’t take you there in person, the classroom and reading experience will undoubtedly bring the city to life. You will also study poetry and a novel in your first year.

About this course
As part of a Level 3 programme, the requirement for A level study is a minimum of five GCSEs at grade A*- C or 4 - 9, or equivalent, including English Language.

This course offers an integrated approach to the study of language and literature. It will encourage you to explore the way language choices create different impressions of the world in a range of literary and non-literary texts, and quite literally, how words create worlds. You will study an anthology of texts offering different perceptions of Paris. While we can’t take you there in person, the classroom and reading experience will undoubtedly bring the city to life. You will also study poetry and a novel in your first year.
Skills:
The course will enable you to develop your subject expertise by engaging creatively and critically with a wide variety of texts. Using literary and linguistic concepts and methods, you will develop your analytical skills and the ability to dissect texts from a range of modes and genres.
In the process, you will gain insights into the nature of different types of writing and explore ideas about creativity. You will develop your skills as both a producer and interpreter of language through a creative writing task and commentary in which you reflect on the creative process.
Teaching and Assessment:
Offering clear skills progression from GCSE, this course will enable you to build on the skills and knowledge you have already gained.
The variety of assessment styles used - such as re-creative writing, commentary writing, essays and research based writing - will enable you to develop a wide range of skills, including the ability to read critically, analyse, evaluate and undertake independent research. These are invaluable for both further study and future employment.
Teaching is by a variety of methods including group work, individual study, whole class discussion, and student-led research and presentations.
The course is assessed by examination.
Progression:
English is valued by all universities and is therefore a very useful qualification, whatever the career path. There is also the possibility of studying English at degree level, leading to a variety of careers including journalism, law, publishing and teaching.

Students who decide to study English Language and Literature can expect a friendly, supportive and encouraging atmosphere. There is an emphasis on developing analytical skills and exploring ideas in response to texts. Students are encouraged to engage in a variety of activities including group work and individual research.
Excursions are also made available to enrich students’ academic experience. Past examples include a trip to see a production of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons at The Curve, and a production of Shakespeare’s Othello in London, starring Lenny Henry.
